Therapist Overview
I specialize in counseling with children, ages 5-12. I realize that when working with a child, I also need to work with their parent(s)/guardian(s). As Dr. William L. Coleman, a developmental-behavioral pediatrician, has stated, “You can’t just focus on the child….The family is the strongest and most enduring influence in any person’s life. You have to take it into account.” Sometimes I even work with the entire family. As a family life educator and former instructor at the University of Utah, I have specialized in helping fragile families (divorced and single parents), improving parent-child interactions, and increasing positive thinking to promote overall well-being. As I work with a child regarding anxiety and anger (secondary emotions) I try to understand the primary emotions to plan effective treatment that focuses on the whole child—physically, mentally, and emotionally. I use an individualized therapeutic approach and focus on the child’s strengths to bring about positive change.
