I spent 19 years of my life serving the public as a peace officer, first as police and then 10 years as an undercover narcotics detective. Trauma, critical incidents, emotions. I told myself I had to be strong and deal with it. Because of the stigma and belief that asking for help was a sign of weakness I resorted to unhealthy coping mechanisms that subsequently resulted in the loss of everything I once had passion for. It took me losing it all before I got help. 8 years ago I began my new life in recovery and found a way out.
