“There is healing in the telling…and the being heard.” I saw these words written on the wall of an art gallery recently. This is so true. We all long for connection. To know and be known. But this hectic, technologically hyper-connected world often ironically leaves us feeling strangely disconnected and lonely. Seasons of life transition, changes in health, finances or relationships, the loss of a loved one, divorce, or a combination of life stressors can take on a compound effect and lead to a state of feeling depressed, fearful, and struggling to find peace and joy. When you tell your story to an empathic listener or engage in caring community or intentionally replace unhealthy thought patterns with truth, you are actually changing your brain chemistry. It is possible to “re-wire” the brain. This offers much hope if you feel stuck in a cycle of shame, depression, anxiety or loneliness.
