To paraphrase Alice Miller: the opposite of depression isn’t happiness; it’s vitality. My clients are people who want to feel more in control, more at peace, more effective, more connected, more present, more focused, more decisive, more flexible… more alive. They seek relief from patterns — sometimes chronic and severe, sometimes only subtly nagging — of painful feelings, negative thoughts and self-sabotaging behaviors that stem from their experience of growing up in particular worlds and particular histories that were traumatic or difficult or confusing. I prefer a flexible, collaborative approach that evolves as we work. I practice psychotherapy through a whole-person-in-social-context lens, getting to know who you are and what you care about, as well as what you’re sick of. Over time we can understand where discouragement or hopelessness has come from, untangling and dissolving whatever diminishes you.
