Growing up with a dysfunctional or abusive parent has long lasting negative impacts on someone’s life. If you are struggling with your adult life now and had a parent with a personality disorder, substance abuse or other serious condition, you might have some of these symptoms: Second guessing yourself. Fear of attacks or criticism. Fear of relationships and being hurt. Recreating past painful relationships with people like your parents. Feelings of anxiety. Feeling easily defeated. Bottled up feelings that come out inappropriately. Ruminating about past hurts. Feeling no one hears you. Survivors of this dysfunction are “adult children.” Treatment focuses on characteristics of people who have grown up in families where one or both parents were abusive or had addictive behaviors. Life in such families is characterized by dysfunction, emotional deprivation, lack of trust, and shame and secrecy from unpredictable moods or behavior. Times are different now.
