A therapeutic relationship is one that improves health by assisting with psychological detoxification and with the establishment of healthy emotional, interpersonal/social, mental, and physical habits to help inoculate against these “toxins.” Sometimes natural healthy defenses against toxic stress break down and fail to protect us against painful or maladaptive feelings, thoughts, and beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world around us. The goal of Psychotherapy is to rebuild and strengthen healthy defenses against toxic stress, while letting go of “back up” defenses that, like a spare tire, cannot suffice for long.
