I often speak with survivors of sexual abuse who– perhaps like you– have focused for the better part of their life on their education, their career, their marriage, or on caring for their children. They thought they had “gotten over it,” that the abuse they suffered has been locked away tightly enough…but inside they know it continues as an undercurrent in their life. When feelings surface, they feel broken, powerless, that their voice doesn’t matter. Sometimes they think they will never be loved, or that they don’t deserve love. They may think that it’s their fault and that they should have done something differently. Many spend years feeling ashamed and guilty, but then one day realize that the time has come for them to work on themselves, both for their own sake and for the people they love.
