“I can’t get no satisfaction.” (Mick Jagger). I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t struggled with discontent at some point in their lives. “Discontent” not like annoyance when the TV remote stops working (!) – but, when it seems as if no matter how many back flips we do, we can’t shake that feeling of inadequacy because we’re unable to make someone (Mom/Dad/Children/Boss/Friend) happy; when we’re feeling anxious, frustrated, powerless, or angry about a situation; or when we need another set of eyes to help us recognize how “good enough” we really are. Our human desire for contentment and connection is what compels intelligent, courageous people to reach out for someone to talk with. I’ve sat with hundreds of people, not only in a therapy setting, but in my ongoing role working with families as a clinical social worker at Mass General.
