Therapist Overview
I value the vital role of the therapeutic relationship in the process of healing and personal growth. My aim is to help clients become more aware of the thoughts and emotions that underlie their distress. With new insights, unhelpful emotional and behavioral patterns can change, opening up new ways of experiencing oneself and others. I see individuals who are struggling with feelings of sadness, disappointment and loss, as well as worry and anxiety. Many who seek care feel dissatisfied in their relationships, unfulfilled at work or in school, or are looking for ways to manage the stress of serious illness or life-altering events. My treatment frame is informed by psychodynamic and interpersonal theories, and I incorporate cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness methods. I tailor my approach to the needs of the individual client, using methods that are research-supported. I treat individuals and couples, and also provide consultation to professional colleagues. I completed my clinical training at Harvard Medical School in 1990, and have had a practice in psychotherapy since that time. Until 2016, I was a faculty member at the University of Rochester where I was engaged in psychotherapy education, patient care, and research on treatments for trauma and depression.
