I have been a clinical psychologist for 29 years and have worked with hundreds of wonderful people. Rather than list my specialties, I would say the most important factor in psychotherapy is the quality of the relationship created between the client and the therapist. The felt experience of really being seen, as clients truly and honestly are, is the vital healing force. If people feel that then almost regardless of the presenting problem, people can gain freedom and control in their lives. Much of psychotherapy deals with the large topic of shame. I think the origin of shame comes from the experience of “Not being enough, not being good enough in all of its forms” — and the therapist’s role is to refute that belief and instead find the person endearingly human.
