As you’ve begun your search for a therapist, what have people told you to look for? A certain certification, a set of initials, a particular theory? Perhaps you are afraid of making the “wrong choice.” In my opinion (and backed by a good deal of research), the methods a counselor uses are not as important as the alliance between the counselor and the client. The number one piece of advice I give young people and their parents when looking for a counselor is this, “Find someone you like.” That said, perhaps you would like to know a little bit about me. I received my Master’s Degree from the University of Chicago in Social Work. Before getting into counseling, I was a combat medic in the Army for 8 years, a volunteer youth worker for 4 years, a full time youth pastor for 8 years. I’ve found most students come to therapy because they are having difficulty figuring out how to navigate their own feelings or relationships with the people closest to them.
