Therapist Overview
About three-quarters of my practice is devoted to individual therapy with gay men and counseling for gay couples. The remainder of my therapy hours are devoted to women, the parents of gay men, and others. I specialize in gay and bisexual issues, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, aging, trauma, personal isolation, relationships, intimacy, sex, HIV, and survivor issues. I have written extensively about the psychological and social issues of gay men and gay communities. My most recent book, released in June 2019 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (and Penguin in the U.K.), is “Out of the Shadows: Reimagining Gay Men’s Lives.” My theoretical approaches vary with the client and our mutual objectives. I draw on psychodynamic, developmental, humanistic and narrative theory. Any therapy relies on the relationship between client and therapist. It must be kind and supportive, and at the same time honest and challenging. Therapy is about self-discovery and the implementation of change. If you would like to discuss the possibility of therapy or couples counseling, please contact me by phone or E-mail. I am happy to set up a telephone talk or office appointment to discuss your issues and to answer any questions you might have. You can also visit my website at waltodets.com.
