I believe that depression and anxiety emerge from patterns of emotion, thought, and behavior that we learned in order to survive. So therapy begins with a faith that you came by your struggles honestly, in an effort to protect yourself and make sense of your world. From there, the first step is to recognize how these patterns function now in your life and your mind, and to believe in the possibility that you can feel different–freer, safer, calmer, more lovable. My training is in two main areas: mind-body approaches to anxiety and trauma, and relational therapy, which focuses on patterns of relationship. Thus my work with patients often focuses on two aspects of experience: what living actually feels like for you, moment-to-moment, and what it’s like for you to try to be close to others.
