“I prefer animals over people,” is something I often hear my clients say. It can be hard to trust and connect with people when you have been hurt before. These emotional injuries are especially true for people who come from dysfunctional families or experience abuse as a child. Alternatively, perhaps the hurt comes later in life from an unhealthy relationship or attaching to someone who leaves abruptly, whether voluntarily or through death. As a result, it can feel safer to push people away to avoid further hurt. We are often left feeling alone but not knowing how to change this pattern. I help clients understand why they do the things they do. We often explore childhood experiences to understand how various events impact who they are today. We examine relationships to enhance the good ones, and set boundaries with unhealthy ones. The hope is to have more satisfying relationships and happiness in life. (Which can feel scary at first).
