Much of our culture considers painful emotion something to be avoided at all costs. In fact, all of our emotions are crucial sources of information about what is going on inside and outside us. If we avoid our painful emotions, it ultimately leaves us feeling worse and more confused. Our unexamined feelings always come out anyway, in other forms: as repetitive conflict, anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms. When we begin to thoughtfully engage with aspects of ourselves that we would prefer to avoid, long-standing negative patterns begin to change, and we start to feel better. As a psychoanalyst, I provide a supportive environment in which my patients can safely address problems, concerns and feelings that are difficult to face alone. My work centers on each patient’s particular experiences and needs, not on generic advice. I work with careful attention and sensitivity to dynamics of race, gender, sexuality, class, and trauma.
