As a therapist, I believe: 1) Therapy works best when it is a conversation rather than you feeling as if the only feedback you get is “uh-huh” or the overly used, “how does that make you feel?” I’m passionate about working with those who are misunderstood or underrepresented; whether that’s identity, non-monogamy, sexuality, or striving to break from expected “societal norms”. It can be scary to be different, and it helps to have a different kind of therapist. 2) Appropriately placed humor can be a way to help the brain move forward. When we are stuck in fear, uncertainty, or judgement, our brain can have difficulty coming up with creative solutions to difficult problems. Infusing humor can lower stress and defenses which helps to unlock our brains and help us move forward. 3) Swearing can be important. I don’t believe in a sterile language environment.
