After working with people in psychotherapy for 42 years I understand that every new person who comes to see me is in emotional crisis, usually frightened, and has mixed feelings about seeking help. I experience every person as unique; initially, it is critical for people to know that they are working with someone who is non-judgmental and worthy of their trust. I still believe that the essence of good therapy is empathy, tactful directness and a collaborative approach that helps people make and internalize changes that will improve their relationships and impart a greater sense of well-being. The goals of psychotherapy are to help people become the best possible version of themselves. Understanding ones formative relationships, current attempts at adaptation, and the way they relate to the therapist contribute to self understanding.
