I’ve worked with all kinds of people over the decades of my practice. By now it is obvious to me that we-humans are both individuals and parts of our social systems: our families, friends, sexual identities, gender identities, racial identities, class identities, spiritual and political creeds. Some of these influences are conscious, but much of them are unconscious. The unconscious can be a source of inspiration, or it can be the source of painful repetition. My clients are working to expand their awareness of the systems they are embedded in, and work through the obstacles and restrictions to living their lives with purpose. I try to deeply understand my clients. This includes the biases my clients and I each bring to our work and making these distortions explicit in our therapeutic relationship. The stuck points that bring clients to therapy become obvious in time. Working these through is both an immediate, felt, in-the-moment process and a cognitive-understanding process. I work
