Veterinarians, physicians, therapists, social service employees, and parents are indispensable as caretakers. However, personal needs, self-care, and personal boundaries are often dismissed by caretakers as indulgences. Caretakers often feel pressured to perform at unachievable levels, making it difficult for them to appreciate their own value. Worse, the relentless imbalance of caring for others without replenishing themselves may lead to personal or professional burnout. Compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, ethical fatigue, feelings of isolation, and difficulties in important relationships may also be present. This must change. As a therapist, a mother, and a veterinarian, I am dedicated to improving wellness and the capacity for self-care in clients who are themselves caretakers. My unique perspective allows for a fresh approach to persistent challenges. I help clients use their innate strengths in novel ways to achieve long-standing goals or to work through present difficulties. I believe each person’s story can be filled with beauty, strength, resilience, and joy despite the presence of loss, hardship, or struggle.
