The tendency to want to be perfect in most or all aspects of life can cause stress, but it can also result from a mental health condition such as anxiety or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Striving for perfection can also be related to childhood trauma. If a person learned they only received love when they performed well, they might carry these core beliefs into their adult life.

By challenging thoughts and beliefs, a person may see how their psyche is harming them. This awareness can create change, or change may come through further exploration and counseling intervention.
