Over-identification with a particular self or selves produces so much suffering in our lives, particularly when we can’t live up to those unrealistic, idealized versions of who we think we should be. An inherent promise of the therapeutic relationship, however, is that it offers us the possibility of grace – the opportunity to be accepted and valued for the splendid mess that we are. This is why I strive in my practice to connect individuals with the “curious paradox” that Carl Rogers spoke of – namely, “when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” I have specialized training through Emory University’s Cognitively-based Compassionate Training program, and I utilize an integrative approach that incorporates a client-centered model with mindfulness-based, third wave cognitive behavioral therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).
