Impulsivity is making decisions quickly without considering consequences. People experiencing chronic impulsivity may make rash choices that negatively impact them. Impulsivity is often a feature of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), brain injuries, or substance use disorders.
Available Treatment Options
Therapist interventions can address the tendency to be impulsive. They can also help manage it as a symptom related to other mental health conditions.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is commonly used in the treatment of BPD but may be helpful for people who experience impulsivity for any reason. It uses distress tolerance skills to let people practice sitting with discomfort without immediately reacting. Mindfulness techniques can help with chronic impulsivity. The person also could practice coping skills that allow for some time between the impulse and action. Pausing to think before acting can reduce the chance of irresponsible decisions.

Ask yourself the last time you felt truly connected to the current moment. Most of us would admit that living in the present is a struggle. So often, we get caught up in trying to rewrite the already lived chapters in our life stories, or have a desire to over control and predict the outcome, that we lose sight of the chapter that we're currently writing.
