Abuse can include many experiences, including physical, emotional, verbal, financial, spiritual, or sexual abuse. Abuse can occur during childhood or adult years. Abuse leads to adverse mental health outcomes, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Acute Stress Disorder, anxiety, and depression.

Available Treatment Options

There are an array of counseling options for abuse survivors. What works for one person may not work for another. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) uses lights and guided imagery to help people process difficult memories related to abuse, so they become less intense. Counseling approaches using mindfulness techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), can help ease flashbacks or triggering situations. Therapists specializing in Narrative Therapy assist people in rewriting the story of their life.
