I work with adults who are committed to improving their personal and/or professional relationships. For most of us, how we feel about our life is directly related to the quality of our relationships, both at home and at work. If you have one (or more) important relationship that is consistently draining, you are likely in pain. We have all developed “emotional shields” as a way to keep ourselves safe from being hurt. Our ways of protecting ourselves in the present are often rooted in traumatic experiences we have had in the past. So, when our “buttons” are pushed, our “shields” go up and we automatically react. All too often our relationship takes a back seat to our need to defend ourselves. When this happens, it is draining and can become exhausting. You don’t have to live that way.
