What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

Home » Treatment Therapies » Internal Family Systems (IFS) » Page 69

Internal Family Systems therapy encourages people to embrace all parts of themselves, even the difficult ones. Its goal is to help people achieve balance and harmony within themselves.

IFS states that people do not have “bad” parts. Instead, they experience difficulty embracing all aspects as simultaneously affecting one another. IFS seeks to name and understand these parts and ultimately balance the factors that work toward self-growth.

Life experiences can encourage the various parts of the self to become out of balance, forcing the system into a less-than-harmonious operating state. Your IFS counselor will help you recognize these parts of yourself, inquire as to why you think they might be off-balance, and then assist you in balancing them.

People with a wide range of mental health concerns can benefit from IFS, but it is particularly effective for those who have dealt with traumatic experiences.

There’s no greater freedom than living in your true self, a self authentically and lovingly connected to others. It’s how we are built. It’s how our children are built. Living the kind of balance many of us aspire to looks a heck of lot easier in print than it is in action. It takes work to integrate it all, but it is so worth it. I bring 14 years of doctoral + post-doctoral level training and ...

From the outside looking in you’ve got it all together. Yes, you are juggling a lot- you are a parent, partner, friend. But everyone’s busy, right? On the inside, though, you are really struggling. You know the kind of person you want to be, but you don’t know how to be that person. You don’t trust your instincts and you second-guess your decisions. You feel reactive, impatient, and emotionally...

I am so passionate about teaming up with children and families to reach their highest potentials, which I believe are astronomical! From my educational training, I understand how children’s unique minds work, and how to creatively get them engaged to work through their current obstacles. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, singled out and isolated by today’s climate, and sometimes just going about daily life can feel like a struggle. Sometimes, feeling on the “outside” of certain communities can be a reflection of the world, and not actually of you and your identity. I am here to really hear you so that you can just exist, without having to explain aspects of your identity, or havi...

My ideal client is someone (child/family or adult) who has a vested interest in their own well-being and that of their family. I have a long history of working with children and families who have not had the understanding of what counseling/therapy is all about. I provide the opportunity, in a safe environment, for them to have that experience. I am client-centered, in other words, my focus is ...
Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start. My clients struggle with anxiety, depression, life transitions, exposure to traumatic events, and PTSD. These symptoms often leave them feeling helpless, afraid, and like things will never get better. Even though you want to run. Even though it's heavy and difficult. Even though you're not quite...
Working with children, teens, and young adults as they navigate the developmental and emotional difficulties of growing is a passion of mine.
