What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

Home » Treatment Therapies » Internal Family Systems (IFS) » Page 388

Internal Family Systems therapy encourages people to embrace all parts of themselves, even the difficult ones. Its goal is to help people achieve balance and harmony within themselves.

IFS states that people do not have “bad” parts. Instead, they experience difficulty embracing all aspects as simultaneously affecting one another. IFS seeks to name and understand these parts and ultimately balance the factors that work toward self-growth.

Life experiences can encourage the various parts of the self to become out of balance, forcing the system into a less-than-harmonious operating state. Your IFS counselor will help you recognize these parts of yourself, inquire as to why you think they might be off-balance, and then assist you in balancing them.

People with a wide range of mental health concerns can benefit from IFS, but it is particularly effective for those who have dealt with traumatic experiences.

I work with people who want to show up in the world and be embraced for ALL of who they are. Most of us have things that we keep hidden from others around us - locked away because we are worried that we are broken, weird, fearful of how we will be judged. The problem is, even when we are great at hiding - these things slowly but surely permeate our lives from the inside out. Everyone around you...

You are not alone, sister... Though you do your best to get up, get dressed (yoga pants count, ladies!) and smile while you uphold all your roles/responsibilities, you are actually living an anxious, panicked, stressed, overwhelmed and depressed life (or your daughter is). Your best version of YOU is locked away - longing. While you hope one day you'll just feel better, in the meantime you find...
It can be lonely and overwhelming to find ourselves in emotional struggle. The therapeutic relationship is unique and one that I deeply trust. It's instrumental to have a companion and guide as we traverse these unchartered inner landscapes. The pain we feel invites us on a transformative journey from obscurity to clarity. It's so tempting to contract when we are challenged, but it's critical t...

We tend to think we should be able to go it alone, or talk with a friend,...or just TRY HARDER when life feels overwhelming and difficult to bear.
