Coping mechanisms, or coping skills, are behaviors that people engage in to help them deal with difficult or stressful situations and emotions. Some can be healthy, but others aren’t.

Available Treatment Options

Therapists and counselors often work with clients to discover what coping mechanisms they’re using and determine if they are helpful. With this information, the person and the therapist can develop different coping mechanisms that are less harmful, such as meditation, exercise, journaling, drawing, or time with family.

I believe that people are innate problem solvers. However, in order to solve problems successfully, we need three key ingredients: information, capacity, and skills. Ideally, therapy isn’t about solving the problem for you, it’s about exploring the problem with you so you can determine how these ingredients are at play and develop your own methods to get them. Sometimes, I like to describe ther...

Winter's darkness calls for stillness and introspection. Maybe you've thought to yourself, "I'm lost. I feel like I'm living outside of my own life. Like I'm not even living, just on autopilot. The anxiety overtakes me. I'm constantly exhausted." You may have even tried therapy before but felt like it didn't make a difference so are skeptical about trying again.
