Impulsivity is making decisions quickly without considering consequences. People experiencing chronic impulsivity may make rash choices that negatively impact them. Impulsivity is often a feature of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), brain injuries, or substance use disorders.

Available Treatment Options

Therapist interventions can address the tendency to be impulsive. They can also help manage it as a symptom related to other mental health conditions.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is commonly used in the treatment of BPD but may be helpful for people who experience impulsivity for any reason. It uses distress tolerance skills to let people practice sitting with discomfort without immediately reacting. Mindfulness techniques can help with chronic impulsivity. The person also could practice coping skills that allow for some time between the impulse and action. Pausing to think before acting can reduce the chance of irresponsible decisions.

Healing is a natural process. It is not something that needs to be forced, only supported and allowed. Often the beliefs and strategies we formed when young were helpful and necessary at the time, yet they can linger on into adulthood and limit us rather than assist us. Therapy is a process of unwinding what is no longer true or helpful, exploring what is most essential and true for us, and...
