Impulsivity is making decisions quickly without considering consequences. People experiencing chronic impulsivity may make rash choices that negatively impact them. Impulsivity is often a feature of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), brain injuries, or substance use disorders.
Available Treatment Options
Therapist interventions can address the tendency to be impulsive. They can also help manage it as a symptom related to other mental health conditions.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is commonly used in the treatment of BPD but may be helpful for people who experience impulsivity for any reason. It uses distress tolerance skills to let people practice sitting with discomfort without immediately reacting. Mindfulness techniques can help with chronic impulsivity. The person also could practice coping skills that allow for some time between the impulse and action. Pausing to think before acting can reduce the chance of irresponsible decisions.

First and foremost, I am concerned with understanding the full person with whom I am sitting, and not solely their problems or symptoms.
