Therapist Overview
I work with a wide range of people who are experiencing difficulties with various aspects of their lives, including emotional struggles (extreme moods, sadness and grief, discouragement, anxiety), relationship problems (with partners, relatives, friends, society at large), difficulties letting go of negative past experiences or patterns, and difficulties identifying or realizing desires for the future. By providing an open space in which they can speak freely, and by encouraging and sustaining their search for their own truth and desires, I work with them to facilitate the discovery of solutions and amelioration of suffering. I am a psychodynamic therapist and analyst trained in both psychoanalysis and couples- and family-therapy. I also work as a professor of literature and philosophy. My background in the study of fiction, poetry, and thought informs my clinical practice, orienting therapy toward each client’s creative imagination as the source of their solutions. Depending on the client, I work with people on their memories, dreams and symptoms (as indirect expressions of what cannot yet be expressed directly), their patterns of thought, behavior, and relationship in the everyday, and their visions for their future. I work in both shorter term and longer term modes, depending on clients’ needs and interests.
