What is Attachment-Based Therapy?

Home » Treatment Therapies » Attachment-based Therapy » Page 1384

Attachment-Based Therapy relies on John Bowlby’s Attachment Theory to inform the therapeutic process. Attachment Theory emphasizes the quality of an infant’s connection to its parent, most primarily its mother. If a child is adequately cared for and responded to, they will grow up to form healthy relationships. If a mother is too distant, unresponsive, or overly cautious, the infant is more likely to grow up to experience unhealthy relationships. Children must get adequate care and love to learn to trust others and themselves.

Attachment-Based Therapy’s goal is to help you rebuild the context of your relationships in more healthy, positive ways. Your therapist will show you openness, caring, and empathy. You can experience what a healthy relationship looks and feels like through this therapeutic relationship.

Although therapists can use it for individual or group therapy, you may benefit from Attachment-Based Therapy in a family therapy setting.

Your therapist will help you discover your particular attachment style based on your relationship with your parents and your early memories of family relationships. They also will explore your current relationship dynamics as they relate to your upbringing. With this understanding, you and your therapist can then begin to restructure your existing relationships based on a foundation of love and trust.

I strongly believe that all of us are programmed to move towards personal growth and healing. Over time, life experiences and new habits can get in the way and leave us feeling stuck or off track from what feels right. Within the safety and support of the therapeutic relationship, I help my clients increase awareness of these barriers and re-activate their internal healing mechanisms. I offer...
I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Masters of Education in School Psychology in 1994 and with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2003. As part of that training, I completed a doctoral level internship in clinical child psychology at Primary Children's Hospital. Since then, I have worked in a variety of settings, specializing in child psychology. The majority of my clinical experien...
There is a quote by J.R.R. Tolkien, "not all those who wander are lost". I think this is a solid descriptor of my life's journey. To the outside observer, I've looked similar to a vagabond as I've "wasted my potential" walking barefoot through Orlando serving the homeless, living in Brazil while working with at-risk children abandoned to the streets, and even more recently as I've dove into...

I believe in creating a safe, relaxed, and nonjudgmental space for clients to process and feel supported while also pushing my clients to take steps toward their goals - because therapy does not need to last foreve...
“Your mind is your instrument. Learn to be its master and not its slave." I understand that you may not have had control over many aspects of your life thus far--we don't always get to choose what we're subjected to. If you deserve control over any aspect of your life, however, it should be yourself. You deserve control of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. You deserve healthy relationships ...
