What is Attachment-Based Therapy?

Attachment-Based Therapy relies on John Bowlby’s Attachment Theory to inform the therapeutic process. Attachment Theory emphasizes the quality of an infant’s connection to its parent, most primarily its mother. If a child is adequately cared for and responded to, they will grow up to form healthy relationships. If a mother is too distant, unresponsive, or overly cautious, the infant is more likely to grow up to experience unhealthy relationships. Children must get adequate care and love to learn to trust others and themselves.

Attachment-Based Therapy’s goal is to help you rebuild the context of your relationships in more healthy, positive ways. Your therapist will show you openness, caring, and empathy. You can experience what a healthy relationship looks and feels like through this therapeutic relationship.

Although therapists can use it for individual or group therapy, you may benefit from Attachment-Based Therapy in a family therapy setting.

Your therapist will help you discover your particular attachment style based on your relationship with your parents and your early memories of family relationships. They also will explore your current relationship dynamics as they relate to your upbringing. With this understanding, you and your therapist can then begin to restructure your existing relationships based on a foundation of love and trust.

I care deeply about supporting people when they feel lonely, stuck and hopeless, and the usual things just aren't working. My clients tend to be high functioning adults who have reached a critical point where something has to give. Often this becomes evident while undergoing a major life transition such as a break up, divorce, the death of a loved one, or a career change. These low points can b...

I help people lead an examined life. Our difficulties come and go, but there's wisdom in using them to learn about ourselves more deeply. This allows us to navigate life's challenges with more grace, and less pain and a lot more humor. Therapy is a funny thing. It's two people, in a room, agreeing to focus on improving one of their lives. Sounds astoundingly simple. When it works, it can offer...
I have worked in inpatient and outpatient settings with a variety of clients and bring decades of experience to the therapy room. I have taught at colleges and am a published author. I may use EMDR, cognitive-behaviora...

Therapy is about renewed hope- kind of like seeing light emanate from a dark tunnel or getting an ah-ha moment that helps you activate change in a 'safe' place. It is seldom easy but is always an opportunity to move forward. Over the last 30 years, I've watched families, children and individuals decide to heal. What a pleasure! I see adults, both male and female, and teens 15 and above. My underlying treatment philosophy is psychodynamic.
