What is Adlerian Psychotherapy?

Adlerian Psychotherapy stems from the ideas of Alfred Adler. Sometimes referred to as “Individual Psychology,” the underlying tenet of Adlerian Therapy is that individuals can positively change their lives.

Adler believed that people have feelings of inferiority. These feelings are positive for individuals with positive ways to cope with them. But they’re negative for those who don’t. When people feel encouraged to strive toward self-improvement due to feelings of inferiority, Adler stated, they contribute to a greater social good.

Adlerian Psychotherapy involves four distinct stages:

  1. Engagement – You and your therapist establish rapport and create a safe environment for you.
  2. Assessment – The therapist learns about your past and present. This stage helps them understand your life experiences and your thinking styles.
  3. Interpretation – The therapist suggests how past experiences color your way of thinking and how those might be helpful or not. You then decide if the therapist’s interpretations are useful.
  4. Reorientation – You test new strategies for ways of thinking and living that help move you toward self-improvement.

If you feel discouraged or inferior, often compare yourself to others, or want to strive for more, you may benefit from Adlerian Psychotherapy.

I work with people facing multiple life issues. Specific among these are: Anger Management, Addictions, Anxiety, Depression, Marital/Couples, Adolescents, Trauma, Parenting/Family Dynamics. While these are specific problems, counseling frequently focuses on more general difficulties interfering with our ability to thrive and be content. Therapy can, and should, be as much about reaching your...
No matter where you are in your life, I’ll meet you there. I see myself as a fellow traveler and grateful for being part of my clients’ journey toward inner-peace, joy, and purpose. Together, without judgment, we observe patterns, dynamics, and triggers. In detective-like fashion we uncover values, meaning, and passion while listening to our gut. At the same time, we explore alternatives, tangi...

We both hurt and heal within the context of relationship (relationship with self, with others, with substances, etc.) and in my practice I emphasize creating a therapeutic relationship and space that is nothing but supportive of your growth, reflection, and self-discovery. The therapeutic relationship itself is the most powerful tool. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all; I am intentional about...

As a musician first, I was drawn to this work as a therapist for many reasons. In both roles, you must be genuine and intentional to be effective, and you must trust the process without getting side tracked by difficulty or unexpected road blocks. You must feel safe enough with those around you to take risks, and be humble so you can continue to learn. As a therapist, I value having the role of...
I believe in meeting people where they are in their desire to begin working on the struggles they are dealing with. It is important to me that a therapeutic rapport is developed so there is trust within the therapeutic relationship. I encourage people to look at how they have solved problems and/or concerns in the past and determine if any of those methods would help in the situation today. It ...
