Trichotillomania causes a person to pull out their hair. It’s not known precisely what causes this disorder, but some experts suggest inheritance, trauma, or situational factors may play a role. Trichotillomania is linked to stress, anxiety, or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Trichotillomania can cause distress in a person’s daily life because of the hair loss, and they may attempt to conceal their habits from others by using wigs or makeup.

Available Treatment Options

Therapist interventions for Trichotillomania include cognitive and behavioral therapies, such as creating an awareness of triggers that lead to hair pulling and replacing that urge with another more healthy behavior.

Therapy may also include mindfulness techniques, such as breathing, journaling, or meditation to decrease stress. Group therapy may also be effective for some people, as shame and embarrassment often surround the disorder. Being in a group setting with people who understand what the person is going through can be therapeutic.
