Growing up as a man in society brings unique gender, gender norms, and gender expression problems. Western culture brings with it sometimes unhelpful messages about masculinity: that men must be tough, not show emotions, enact violence, and gain power and status. Men are less likely to seek out mental health therapists than other genders. Men must recognize seeking treatment for mental health concerns doesn’t make them less masculine or manly. It implies that they acknowledge that their health is vital.

Available Treatment Options

Counselors can help men work through the hesitancy to talk about mental health within therapy sessions. Some men may benefit from seeing a therapist who also identifies as a man, as the shared knowledge of the impact of their gender can facilitate the healing process.

The step to enter into counseling is a courageous one, it encompasses your willingness to connect, to be vulnerable, and to seek hope in healing. These patterns are often imposed by society, family, and ones' own culture and/or...

I work with most common psychological concerns, but I do so within the larger context of understanding that we're always - in one form or another - seeking deeper aspects of our true self. What I'm calling our "true self" isn't one thing in particular, but is comprised of many qualities, and all of them are equally valuable. Some of us really want intimacy and love, while others need to priorit...

Suppose in everyday interactions, you were able to teach your children to deal with frustrations skillfully. What would your marriage look like if you weren’t compelled by anger to say the thing that causes your wife or husband to stop speaking to you or you were able to be more...
