Growing up as a man in society brings unique gender, gender norms, and gender expression problems. Western culture brings with it sometimes unhelpful messages about masculinity: that men must be tough, not show emotions, enact violence, and gain power and status. Men are less likely to seek out mental health therapists than other genders. Men must recognize seeking treatment for mental health concerns doesn’t make them less masculine or manly. It implies that they acknowledge that their health is vital.

Available Treatment Options

Counselors can help men work through the hesitancy to talk about mental health within therapy sessions. Some men may benefit from seeing a therapist who also identifies as a man, as the shared knowledge of the impact of their gender can facilitate the healing process.

When skiing, it is important to keep your weight forward; leaning in gives you control. The paradox is that very often our thoughts and emotions scream for us to do the opposite, to lean back, away from what brings us anxiety and fear. In life, like in skiing, leaning back is a natural instinct, but too often it serves only to diminish our control and take us in a direction opposite from the on...
