Borderline Personality Disorder is difficulty in relationships, intense fears of abandonment, mood instability such as anger and sadness, impulsivity, and thinking in terms of extremes. Thoughts surrounding relationships often cause the most harm, as people with BPD tend to have an over-idealized or extremely negative picture of the same relationship. Impulsiveness can lead to risk-taking. Some people with BPD can have suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors.

Available Treatment Options

Therapist interventions for BPD often involve challenging unhelpful thought patterns in terms of a person’s ideas about themselves and their relationships, such as in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Once challenged, therapy can then help alter these thought patterns to be more helpful and realistic.
