An Adjustment Disorder is when a person experiences distressing symptoms that affect their day-to-day life due to a stressful event that occurred within the past three months. The stress resulting from the event is more substantial than the stress that people occasionally experience in that it disrupts daily functioning. Anyone can experience an Adjustment Disorder after a particularly stressful or traumatic event. The disorder has the potential to develop into other mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or other trauma-related disorders.
Therapists counseling interventions and techniques that are generally effective for people experiencing Adjustment Disorders include addressing negative self-talk, such as in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), practicing mindfulness, and group interventions, such as family therapy for children and adolescents and group counseling for adults. Counseling for an Adjustment Disorder aims to reduce symptoms related to and resulting from stress.
