Does Medicaid Cover Therapy?

Medicaid covers most mental health services and reimburses for many substance use disorder treatments.

Medicaid may require a copay, which you’ll need to pay out of pocket. You also may need to choose a provider in your network and get a referral from your primary care physician, depending on your plan. In addition, your plan may set limits on the number of therapy sessions covered.

If the specific therapy you need isn’t covered, you’re required to pay out of pocket for treatment.
