LMFTs are trained mental health marriage and family therapists who are licensed to diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders in marriage, couples, and family systems. Requirements vary by state, however, as a basis, therapists much obtain a master’s degree or doctorate from an accredited program, have supervised clinical experience, and obtain a passing score on state and/or national licensing exam.
