I am most interested in understanding my clients through careful listening and conversation, and creating a relationship in which they feel emotionally safe and free to talk. With understanding that we gain through our exchanges, I draw on my past clinical experience, relevant theoretical ideas, and my own reflections to find meanings with my clients as we talk. This is, in part, to help the client make sense to themselves and accept parts of themselves that may have felt unacceptable. These mutual discoveries then can help the clients to find directions for addressing the challenges that brought them to therapy. Additionally, these discussions can then help the client to consider alternative approaches through which to understand and address significant problems in their lives. My appreciation of the value of these conversations comes from over 35 years of clinical practice, consultations, and teaching and supervising doctoral psychology students.
