What is Adlerian Psychotherapy?

Home » Treatment Therapies » Adlerian Psychotherapy » Page 4

Adlerian Psychotherapy stems from the ideas of Alfred Adler. Sometimes referred to as “Individual Psychology,” the underlying tenet of Adlerian Therapy is that individuals can positively change their lives.

Adler believed that people have feelings of inferiority. These feelings are positive for individuals with positive ways to cope with them. But they’re negative for those who don’t. When people feel encouraged to strive toward self-improvement due to feelings of inferiority, Adler stated, they contribute to a greater social good.

Adlerian Psychotherapy involves four distinct stages:

  1. Engagement – You and your therapist establish rapport and create a safe environment for you.
  2. Assessment – The therapist learns about your past and present. This stage helps them understand your life experiences and your thinking styles.
  3. Interpretation – The therapist suggests how past experiences color your way of thinking and how those might be helpful or not. You then decide if the therapist’s interpretations are useful.
  4. Reorientation – You test new strategies for ways of thinking and living that help move you toward self-improvement.

If you feel discouraged or inferior, often compare yourself to others, or want to strive for more, you may benefit from Adlerian Psychotherapy.

As a psychotherapist, I work with clients to validate their struggles, help them understand past patterns and motivations, derive new insights, and ultimately lead to commitment-driven change. I believe all people understand their needs and wants inherently, and therapy can serve as the conduit to better understand and elicit the best approach for each individual, allowing them to advocate for ...

The life we live and the life we want do not always match up. Funny enough, life some times gets in the way of the life we want. I believe that we can live an authentic life with meaningful connections that makes suffering through hard stuff worth it. A person is more than their problems, thoughts, and feelings. I like to work with individuals on figuring out what kind of life they want, and ho...
We all have within us an innate life purpose. We know that this purpose is unique to who we are as individuals regardless of our environment, this purpose does not simply disappear. Instead the purpose insists on being heard, regardless of whether one is living their authentic life or not if they do not follow their purpose they will often times feel pulled in opposite directions. What does you...

Over the years, I've learned that clients deserve the dignity of solving problems in their own time and in their own ways. It's not a therapist's job to tell you how to live your life or set deadlines for change. Rather, it's my job to help you discover and remove obstacles that stand in the way of the life you want. I use this non-biased approach and a laid back conversational style to help yo...
Reaching out for help can be difficult and frightening. You deserve commitment to maintaining a non-judgmental and collaborative therapy environment when the time comes. Our tendency as humans is to avoid any contact with disturbing memories. Unfortunately, during traumatic experiences our minds focus on the worst part; so this remains our experience. Much like our bodies, our minds have the...

**Accepting New Clients** Research shows that the number one key factor to living a long life is directly related to one’s feeling of connectedness with others. Yet, a quarter us feel as though we have no one to talk to. It’s biologically imperative to know that we belong, matter and feel seen and heard. Therapy helps people (sometimes for their first time ever) to feel understood and have thei...

Humans goal is normality. We want, desire, and need to feel normal. Yet, simultaneously we desire to be unique, special, and individualistic. I believe it is necessary to think of humans as puzzle pieces in order to fulfill both. While the pieces share the same geographical space as well as have the same manufacturer, they are unique and serve varying purposes. Do you belong at the top but are...
