Historical and intergenerational trauma refers to the passing down of trauma from one generation to another. If someone’s parent had significant trauma that affected the way they handled relationships, that tends to affect the person as they grow up. This type of trauma can trace back many decades through generations.

Addressing the trauma that the family member experienced is ideal, even if that person is no longer living. Processing emotions related to the trauma that family member experienced can give a person clarity and understanding. Understanding trauma is not the same as dismissing abusive behaviors. Instead, it’s accepting the person for their experiences and how those experiences and choices affected their relationship.
